Outdoor electrics are unforgiving. Every corner cut on cable rating, gland sealing, IP class or RCD selection shows up eventually — usually the first winter after installation. Doing it once, properly, means it disappears into the garden and stays working.
External sockets are IP66 minimum with weatherproof hinged covers, fitted at 450 mm above ground on a robust back box, and fed on a dedicated RCD-protected radial from the consumer unit. Ideal for lawnmowers, pressure washers, patio heaters and outdoor Christmas lighting without dragging an extension lead out of a window.
Layered garden lighting works the same way as indoor lighting — path markers for orientation, uplights on trees or structures for depth, and downlights on soffits or pergolas for usable outdoor space in the evening. Low-voltage 12 V systems (Garden Zone, Ellumière or similar) keep the shock risk minimal and simplify cable routing; mains 230 V used where higher output is needed.
Any outbuilding used regularly benefits from its own supply. We run SWA cable in the garden trench to a small garage consumer unit inside the outbuilding, giving you lighting, sockets and a dedicated space for tools or a home office. Fully compliant with BS 7671 Section 705.
Hot tubs typically need a dedicated 20 A or 32 A circuit with a Type A RCD (some manufacturers require Type B — we check the spec against the model). Isolator located outside the required zone but within reach. Handled routinely alongside garden lighting when a landscape scheme is going in.
Ponds and water features carry the most stringent zoning rules — Section 702 of BS 7671. We route cabling, install correctly rated isolators outside the safety zones, and specify the correct IP-rated equipment. Automatic gates and irrigation controllers handled to the same standard.
