Service overview

What smart home installation actually involves.

What it is

Design and installation of smart home systems — lighting scenes, smart heating controls, motorised blinds, integrated security and doorbells, whole-home audio, and the hubs and infrastructure that hold them together.

Who it's for

Homeowners refurbishing or building, retrofitters replacing tired wired lighting with smart controls, and new-build purchasers wanting the system planned in from carcass rather than bolted on later.

When you need it

Best done during any refurbishment — smart lighting circuits, keypad wall boxes and network cabling all belong in the first-fix stage. Retrofit smart is possible but always more expensive and never as clean.

Why a professional matters

Most smart home problems trace back to a consumer-grade Wi-Fi bulb hub trying to run whole-house lighting on a router in another building. Properly designed systems use wired protocols where reliability matters, and confine wireless to the loads that can tolerate an occasional dropout.

What's at stake

Left alone, small issues get expensive fast.

The reason to book proper work now — instead of putting it off — comes down to what happens when you don't.

Wi-Fi-only systems drop out under load

Consumer smart bulbs on a busy home Wi-Fi are the number one reason 'my smart home doesn't work reliably.' Wired protocols exist for a reason.

Cheap hubs are abandoned by manufacturers

Two-year-old hubs from long-departed brands leave you with an expensive brick and no path to update. Trade-grade systems have decade-plus roadmaps.

DIY installs create incompatible islands

A lightbulb here, a thermostat there, a doorbell somewhere else — none of it talking, none of it in one app. Poor UX, and you're the tech support.

Retrofit costs multiply on rework

Fitting smart lighting properly during a refurb is straightforward. Adding it after plaster is up means chases, patch-and-fill and often a decorator second-visit.

Our process

A clear system, start to finish.

  1. 01
    Requirements workshop

We sit down with you and understand what actually needs to be smart — and what's happier as a light switch. Ruthless prioritisation saves budget.

  2. 02
    System design and quote

Written scope with the protocols (KNX, Loxone, LightwaveRF, Hue, Lutron), backbone wiring, hubs and keypads specified line by line.

  3. 03
    First-fix infrastructure

Network cabling, keypad back boxes, driver locations and hub positions installed during the refurbishment phase.

  4. 04
    Second-fix and commissioning

Fittings installed, hub configured, scenes programmed, app onboarded. We walk you through the system in person before we leave.

  5. 05
    Handover and support

Certification issued, admin credentials handed over, and a follow-up call booked to fine-tune after you've lived with it for two weeks.

Why it matters

The outcome you actually get.

  • Actually reliable

Wired backbones for lighting and controls; wireless only where it's appropriate. No more 'the office light isn't listening today.'

  • One app, one system

Coherent user experience across lighting, heating, blinds and security — not five different apps and no memory of which does what.

  • Future-proof platforms

Manufacturers with long-term roadmaps and firmware support — Loxone, KNX, Lutron and the current generation of Hue and Nest.

  • Local support

Warranty and support you can call, not an offshore chatbot. We commissioned it — we know it.

  • Scene-based, not device-based

'Evening' and 'Movie' and 'Away' rather than fiddling with individual lights. That's what makes it feel smart.

  • Genuine energy savings

Smart heating and lighting, done properly, do save on the bill. Done badly they just waste money on hardware.

Detail matters

The specifics of how we do smart home installation.

Smart home is a mature category now — the reliable systems are properly identified and the consumer-grade gimmicks are properly identified. The trick is knowing which one is which and building a system that will still work in ten years.

Smart lighting done properly

For serious smart lighting we lean on Lutron, Loxone or KNX with wired keypads and dimmers, and use Hue or LightwaveRF for smaller retrofits where wired isn't practical. In every case, lights respond instantly to a physical keypad — because the moment your smart lighting depends on your phone, you've built an inferior light switch.

Smart heating

For most homes Google Nest, Hive or Tado do a competent job on the existing boiler. Where you have zoning, underfloor heating or a heat pump, we specify a proper zoning controller (Loxone or Heatmiser) that manages per-room temperatures rather than a single downstairs thermostat pretending to speak for the house.

Blinds, curtains and shading

Motorised blinds and curtains are wonderful when they're wired in during the refurbishment and integrated into scenes ('Movie' drops the blinds, 'Wake' opens the bedroom curtains). Retrofit motors exist but almost always end up more expensive and less tidy than doing it during a refit.

Doorbells, cameras and access

Ring, Nest Doorbell, Reolink and Unifi Protect are all reliable choices depending on how integrated you want them. We wire in a proper doorbell transformer, run PoE for cameras, and integrate the whole lot into the home automation system where the manufacturer allows it.

Audio and cinema

Sonos Amp or Denon HEOS in-wall systems give whole-home audio without visible boxes. For dedicated cinema rooms we integrate lighting, blinds and audio into a single 'Movie' scene — the room dims, blinds drop, and the projector fires up on one button.

Do I need to rewire for a smart home?

Not always — many retrofits use existing lighting circuits and simply replace switches and fittings. For genuinely reliable whole-home systems, some new cabling (usually to keypads and hubs) does the job better than another Wi-Fi hop.

Which system is best?

Depends on scope and budget. Loxone and KNX for whole-home, wired-first installs; Lutron for premium lighting; Hue and LightwaveRF for retrofit and smaller scopes. We recommend based on your project, not brand loyalty.

Will it still work if my internet is down?

Yes — properly designed systems keep local control (switches, keypads, scenes) working entirely on the home network. Internet is only needed for remote-away control and voice assistants.

How much does a smart home cost in Crewe?

Highly variable — a smart lighting retrofit on one room from £600; a whole-home Loxone system over £15,000 depending on scope. Quoted line-by-line after a workshop.

Can you integrate what I already have?

Usually — Hue, Nest, Ring and Sonos all integrate happily with most hubs. Older or unsupported kit sometimes has to be replaced to fit into a coherent system.

What about voice control — Alexa, Google, Apple?

Yes — all supported. We prefer to build the underlying system on a reliable hub and add voice on top, rather than the other way round.

Do you handle ongoing support?

Yes — support packages available for whole-home systems, and single-call support for retrofits. Warranty and workmanship guarantee as standard.

Can smart heating really save money?

Yes — done properly. A single Nest saves a modest amount; zoned smart heating on a large house can save materially more. We're honest about the payback before you spend the money.
